So, the FLIP ULTRA HD camera is sweet. It’s easy to use, great for point and shoot type situations. But alas it was returned and swapped out for the SANYO VPC-HD100, which is still a very simple recorder and easy to use. The FLIP was too simple for me, almost as if it were dumbed down a little too much. I guess the idea is, less options less stress, but for me I need a few more things in a camera other than the simplicity of point and shoot operations.
PROBLEMS WITH FLIP:
- OUTPUTS – The only available output is a mini HDMI port from the camera. My television supports HDMI and it didn’t work with this camera once. The camera acknowledged that it was hooked up to the television, but never played any of the video as it was supposed to. This could be a cord issue that I failed to investigate further.
- FIRST GENERATION – I always have a problem with First Generation products. It’s like they are always doomed to fail in one way or another. My impulse to by this fun gadget blocked my common sense of staying away from first generation models.
- FILE TYPES – There is one set mode of MPEG4. That’s fine, but if your computer is more than a couple years old, it probably won’t be able to edit any of these files. So unless you want straight up documentation, or have no interest in editing your videos, make sure your computer is up to par.
- FIXED MEMORY – A rechargeable battery pack is great. It’s even better if you aren’t limited to 2 hours of video or less. I’m not saying most people go out and shoot more than two hours of video, but without a way to empty your camera (unless you carry a laptop everywhere) then your screwed. Go for a instant video recorder that takes removable memory, that way you can use the memory chips like tapes, and just bring a couple spares just in case.
So I got this little beauty instead. It’s actually really great and does full 1440 HD which looks REAL good on a TV. I just realized how fucking boring this whole post is.
